I had not wanted Sarkozy to win but to riot against the democratically expressed will of the people is not something I could support. The rioters were apparently not immigrants in the suburbs. What do you think?dunno

Generally speaking, people who riot, like to riot; political issues are always good excuses.
Time mag had a good comparison on riots,French/ European versus the US: 1, the number of dead, killed, in two weeks of riots outside Paris; 58 killed in 5 days of riots in riots in Los Angeles in 1992...not like the riots in 1848, wherein French troops simply opened fire and killed hundreds within minutes. Modern riots where army troops are used and open fire, makes me wonder how they were trained, if at all, when hundreds or even thousands are fired on/at and the papers scream "Massacre!" Troops open fire; leaving 5 dead"...Five!?? What were they using, 22 caliber rifles instead of their FN's, where one round can easily pass through 5 people ?...Ias just one officer with his pistol can kill 5 rioters...it boggles the mind....

LOL! 1. You're not supposed to ask that !
2. "The Left", whatever that is, is Sacred, Holy; whatever opposes it, is "an enemy of the people"....whoever "the people" are; usually it's just those saying that....
I have lobbied for years in favour of "equal representation" for and in any riots; that all riots should also have the opposite side stage a riot, allowing people to choose which line up to join and riot,; or, simply narrow it all down to a business of professional rioteers who would, for a fee, stage a riot for whatever you wanted, just fill out the forms, pay by card or bank draft, (sorry, no personal cheques) and sign the insurance liabilities then your the no-fault clause and voila! Your riot will be between the hours of....and....at.... etc. etc.

of course riots arent direct solution but they are a pression. In this case, they are a way of showing Sarkozy administration that people are not sleeping, won't be passively watching him do what he wants on the way he wants. So, not only the parlament will be shooting but the population is actively with the eyes open.
So, i don't think Sarkozy will be reforming the country, passing all his plans, some of them too drastic just like that!He would be much more dangerous in other country but not in one such as Frence.France's background stuckes him enough to make him reasonable on his plans and reforms.

Very good points Cristina - muito obrigada !

Only the foreign policies and eventual tendence to play a bigger role again in military spectacles are the once still to watch out for, now as said before .. the people in France are critiques by nature ..also they have a quite critic free press of all couleurs !

As France is the main inspiration for and designer of the EU, I seriously doubt that the new Govt. would threaten its own existence within the EU legal system or conventions, other than having made most members tremble when housing for the poor and destitute was declared and passed as law, a human right. Sarkozy was fed up with all the poor living on the streets and that was his way of finally ending it, unilaterally, without consultation with other EU countries. I still say Good for him, he moved France in the right direction because the bureaucracy would not move...Soon, the other members will have to also declare it and the clock is ticking in Scotland to implement a similar law within 2 years I believe...

I'd better ad a "PS" as regards Foreign Policy and the French military...the only possible and or viable use of its armed forces, the Legion notwithstanding, would be, once again in Tchad which borders Sudan. France has been obliged several times to use the Legion there against sporadic attacks by nomadic tribes in the north, then aided by Libya...Libya is no longer a problem whereas Sudan is and has been even before I was there in the early 70's. They were locked into a very bloody civil war, which still re-occurs as now; that is the spill over flash point for France to protect Tchad and its people; same on the western border with Nigeria, should civil war again break out; the other 3 countries are doing well and are prospering under the "French Commonwealth" umbrella with some rotation of combat troops in Bangui, just in case...they do not need another Emperor Bokassa...
