To all you single parents what do you think about a 9 yr old staying home alone?

I dont think a child of this age should be left unsupervised. I was upset to find out my ex left my 9yr old (with her 5 yr old sister) alone to go shopping for a couple hours.

At what age can children start being alone/unsupervised. (i am not talking to play on the street with a friend). I am talking about being left at home alone.

I do not think it is right. At nine children do not have the mentallity to know what is right and they probably dont have the ability to act in case of emergency.

Here in BC they have that babysitting course which you have to be 10 in order to take and 12 in order to be left legally in charge of younger children.

IMO you should talk to da momma and voice your concers. It cant hurt and who knows maybe there was other supervision or something you didnt know about.

I'm against it too.Maybe for a minute or two ok but to go out shopping and leave them in charge of a 5 yr old? nooooooo way

Ok she may be mature but that's a lot to put on her at that age.Just not right.

Here they have to be 12 to babysit and it's illegal to leave any child alone in a car under the age of 8 even to go pay for ur gas.

I would say 11/12 at the absolute youngest... but it would depend on the child too.

I took my babysitters certificate at 11 and 12 is usually the normal age.

My boys are 8 and almost 4 and I could see leaving Justin for a max of 5-10 minutes if I went out to the garbage or something but no longer... I don't think my house would be standing if I was gone much longer!

I' de be furious Pucks. Why couldn't she take the kids shopping. Shopping emergency? Depending on the child's maturity, my opinion is 12-15 yrs before them being on their own...I don't know. Is there a neighbor to check in? Does she have a cell? Is it an apartment? If so, what's the address?very mad...LOL. It makes my skin crawl when I hear about stuff like this. You really have to wonder about some people, and where their head is at. I' de tear a strip off her for sure. With the added responsibility of a five yr old to boot.

Your ex = irresponsible.scold

I think she'd sure be frowned upon if the authorities had ever needed to attend.

I agree with the rest of the population here..9 too young and in ont you need to be 10 to be left alone...11 in charge of sib over 5....12 to babysit....I have to leave my 11 yr old for 30-40 min sometimes but call on my cell during that time...might want to call and get the age restrictions in your prov and discuss it with her

mistake on my part. my oldest is 10. Nonetheless to young to be left alone. I get along well with mom so we had a good chat this evening. It wont happen again. She was thinking that she babysat others at 10 so it would be ok kinda thing. i said i thought 12 was reasonable. WE agreed.

my older kids were origiona latch key kids - came home after school til I got home. Aged 10 and 6. Guess it really depends on the kids. My youngest were getting them selves up and out of the house onto the school bus in grades 5/6. Pit fall of single parenthood sometimes. But I have to give them all credit they have all been very responsible.

The best thing about it is, when we do have a disagreement (which is not often), we communicate and talk it out. It rarely lasts. The benefits of being friends with your ex. (and not friends with benefits you sicko's...she is getting married in September).
r daughters totally benefit as well thru our friendship and co operation. Now i can sleep much better tonite knowing we have agreed on this issue.banana

Its not off topic. Its about single parenting and your experiences. That is great you get along with your ex. I too wish more people did like us. But i understand that in some cases it is just not possible. Kudo's to you.cheering

I must admit on many levels it is just because it is easier to get along than not to. But thanks cheering to you too..

well yes i agree. Of course there has been times where i just shake my head....ummm today's a perfect example, or when i just want to pull her hair out, but generally, i take some time, sit back and think before reacting. Then i am calmer and reasonable in my responses and i find it works wonders for us.head banger

yup joint birthdays.
my youngest is turning six this friday. i have my ex and her family coming here to my place along with my family and friends. We are having a big bday party.
i dont think it is weird at all that we do this. you ask my daughter emily who she wants at her bday party and she will say mom, dad, nana, papa, uncle Dave, her friends etc. So we just do what is best for her.
I have even been invited to my ex's wedding in the fall. I am not sure if i will go though. I might with a date. OK so this brings up something..who's gonna be my date in september for my ex's wedding. LOLrolling on the floor laughing enough already, i am babbling away here.
