How many of you own a home?
Do you prefer to rent?

Real estate values across most of Canada have sky rocketed. Do you think this trend will continue? Or are we in for a bubble burst?

In the USA, things are completely different. Prices have fallen, and many people are foreclosing. Is this going to happen in Canada?

What are your thoughts?

I'm sharing an apt with my best friend.
Have my mom's house but that's too fresh for me.Might fis it up and rent it out. Also have two lots,a small residential one and a 7 acre bush lot.
They're not evaluated at much for now but the area is building up because of the ski center and the new highway so who knows....might be woth something someday.
For now I'd say prices will keep rising yet for a while and then level off,at least that's what I'm seeing around here.

an advantage of living on a militray base in a "common room" - no rent / no utilities / and free food!! peace

BUT ....... no cable / no internet / NO PRIVACY!!! crying

but when living at my place - I rent. As being in the forces I can't bring myself to be paying for a new place every 5 years or so!!

I own my house. I prefer it to renting because I can change whatever I want when I want!

I bought my house 2 1/2 yrs ago and since I am relatively close to the "oil patch" housing costs are steadily increasing here... a banker estimated value of housing to be increasing 5 to 15% per year in this area (depending on home size etc).

I had to sell the house when I separated. I'm renting at this moment but plan on buying another house by next summer.

I've just purchased my second home (personally). I've walked away from 2 homes to which I was entitled to a portion.

In 7 years my initial invesment has increased 36.6 times itself... considering I would have paid more in rent than I paid in mortgage payments anyway.. there isn't any other way to top that rate of return.

In Alberta, I expect the trend to slow (which it is starting to now) but increase at a more moderate rate for the next 10 years or so. I do not expect a bubble to burst for at least 15 to 20 years from now, if then.

We did have a period of foreclosures where people walked away from their homes and interest rates were in the low to mid 20%. That was a little over 20 years ago.

Rates are on the rise...i wonder how high they will go. They have not gone up much yet...but the the 4 changes have been hikes.

Forclosures are scary. I feel sorry for people who are just getting by now. If they have to renew at higher rates look out.
