Well,

I reckon I've wimped out!

Somehow, I just don't feel 'right' about going on this cruise this year. I'll feel a lot happier when my house is sold and I feel more settled; although I've been very spontaneous in the past I'd like to plan this trip for late June/early July next year to go at the best time........ it's a trip I only want to do once (I think).

I have very mixed feelings about going on a cruise on my own. I would imagine it would be nice to go with a travelling companion, but not nice to have a captive audience (for either person).

There is no problem in making friends on a cruise - with people from all sorts of interesting backgrounds, but right now I don't feel like making the effort to be charming and a real gentleman - I just can't be arsed!

I'm still slightly too young to travel on world cruises free of charge - one has to be male and 55 years of age, and be able and willing to play lots of bridge and dance with dear old ladies (no romance allowed!).

The cruise lines actually give single men with a certain sophistication free passage (plus it was $100 pocket money a decade or so ago) provided they can ballroom dance and play bridge and at least act like a gentleman and own a tuxedo/dinner jacket.

I read this article like well over a decade ago. Guess what? Most of the men employed were actually in the financial services industry! One guy eloped with a wealthy widow - badm bad man!

rolling on the floor laughing

Bear/beer??? beer in mind that Hurtigruten is nowhere near the large cruiseships, it think there's mostly couples on that line...
So I think you'd be better off chosing a different company in your quest for wealthy widows... rollers

Oslo,

The person I'd like most to go on the cruise with is my dad, but he can't go.

He's a mean bridge player and I'm sure we'd have a great time - plus he can be left alone if I wanted to do 'my own thing' as long as he had plenty of books to read. I get him eight books a week from the library to read at present; plus he reads the Economist and another weekly newspaper he subscribes to.

I would NOT want to go on a large cruise line up the coast of Norway. It would spoil the whole essence of the trip.

Maybe when I go next year I'll either enjoy my own company, or, if I go with a travelling companion I'll feel more comfortable talking to other couples.

This cruise would not be a cruise to 'pick up' some sad woman. I'd be going to see the wonderful scenery and experience the fantastic food (according to my parents the food was excellent).

Thanks for your advice. I always appreciate advice, although I do make up my own mind in the end!

I'm sure you do!smile

I think the best way to go, would actually be Hurtigruten, just because of the things you mention...
And I was actually joking about the widows, and picking up women!

I've been on a couple of cruises with the rather big ships, and they were great, but some of the american ignorance on display there was quite annoying.
So I'd choose a smaller one any day! (Cruise that is laugh)

My parents went on quite a few 'cruises' that were cargo boats with just a half dozen cabins for passengers - they would dine with the Captain on a daily basis, and take an interest in the various cargo being loaded and unloaded..plus the changing itinery would make it a bit of a 'mystery' cruise........but my mother said 'NO!' when my dad offered to take her on a trip that would have lasted over 3 months - I think she might have wanted to throw him overboard if it lasted more than a few weeks!

They were going to go on a three week Indian Ocean cruise in January this year - my dad even wanted to book a cabin for a nurse to help look after my mother (I was just SO jealous and wanted to go too!).

He spent a year planning it back in 2005/2006 and had carefully made provision for all the special needs involved in taking a paralysed lady on such a journey.

It was only my dad's own failing health that finally made him admit it wasn't such a clever idea. He's got over it now, and says he'll never leave this island again in his lifetime; however this is a lovely island, and he and my mother are very blessed.

cheers
