I spent about 3 1/2 hrs sitting on my porch last night watching the lightning strikes start brush fires. I slept with my cloths on and on foot on the floor in case I had to evacuate. It was a very scary but cool experience at the same time, I noticed when a lightning strike was going to come close I could feel the hairs on my forearms raise up and I could hear the electricity in the air all around me , it sounded like running water in the kitchen sink, then there would be a blinding flash and a clap of thunder so loud it would rattle your eye teef . So there I sat with a Pick and shovel sitting next to me in case I had to run out into my front yard, which is large enough to put 2 more of my houses on it. To put out any spot fires that might be started by the lightning. Its pretty here but dangerous in the summer .
I put up a picture of some clouds kicked up by the brush fires, these fires move so fast that they evaporate all the ground water in front of them which forms into these huge clouds, very pretty also .
No worries, I live in Elko Nevada, I live at the base of the Ruby Mountain range which is rich in Buffalow grass, cheet grass, Large Sage Brush Junipers, Mahogany Aspen and Pine trees all rolled into one. We get evening thunder storms here almost daily. its a bit different than where you live.
Thats from yesterday afternoon, as soon as the winds died down they were able to put them all out . And Arn't the clouds cool looking ? Its just incredible the amount of moisture which gets sucked up into the air in front of these things which move between 30 and 50 mph
When your under one of these storm cells its very cool, you can feel the electricity all around you , its sort of like little ants crawling all over your body. But its not, its just the little fine hairs on your arms and stuff being raised up by the electricity in the air around you . Was very cool
Near where I live there seems to be a kind of path which the lightning follows...any way it strikes very often and very often near by ..when it is so close, one can even smell it ..kind of burnt smell..like when one strikes a match. No bush fires though! And yes, it certainly does raise those tiny hairs Great picture - thanks for sharing that!
For the most part if your under somethng like a porch then you should be ok, thats what I did I was wearing rubber soled hiking boots in case I had to run out into the middle of the yard and do some quick digging. And thats exactly what it feels like when your in a storm cell where there is alot of lightning, it feels like thousands of little critters crawling all over your body at once. Its creepy at first until you realise what it is .
