You remind me of an experience I went through a long time ago. I had a baby son who was sick with spinal meningitus and his mom and I were at our wit's end trying to work and look after our two older daughters and be at the hospital with little Johnny. It was the most heart wrenching time of my life and one evening there was a knock on the door.

I opened the door and there was "Old Jim" and his wife. They were Americans who had a summer home across the street from us and they had a big pot and a plate. In the pot was a pot roast with all the fixins and the plate had a huge angel food cake on it. Jim said that his wife had cooked and baked these for us because we have to eat. She was a school teacher in Buffalo, New York and she told me that the whole Catholic School system in Upper New York was praying for John.

I really couldn't answer him at the time except a little choked thank you.

John will be 29 next month and he's in excellant health. (looks like Matt Damon) I guess he'll have to deal with that.

I never forgot that act of kindness from a couple who chose not to stay strangers.

As most of you on here know by now, I work in a kitchen, keeper of the local tomain as I refer to myself. Well just about every night as we're closing down the kitchen, there's always quite a bit of food left over, and the things we can't keep over night, like mashed potatoes, salads, coffee, and other stuff, we normally threw out. I live in Surrey and if anyone knows this area at all will know that there are quite a few of homeless people that hang around the Surrey Central skytrain station all night. One night when I was walking home, someone asked me if I had some lose change I could spare, and swore it was for food and nothing else. I felt sorry for him, so I gave him 5 bucks and told him I hoped it would help and that was all I had on me at the time. I forgot my keys at work and had to go back for them, on my return trip home again, I saw that same guy, and he was trying to buy drugs with the 5 bucks I gave him, that's when I came up with the idea. Now when I leave work, I take some of the take-out boxes along with some plastic forks, and when I walk home, whenever someone asks me for money for food, I give them the food instead. I now have several people waiting for me when I walk home, and although it is just food we'd normally throw out, it still gives me a good feeling knowing someone's not going completely hungry tonight

When my husband was dying, the people from the church we were attending brought us meals a couple of times a week for a few months so i wouldn't have to cook. It was a blessing because it was time i could spend with my husband.

They are still very special people to me and although we don't live in the same city anymore, we still keep in contact.

You are good man Brew.

I often hand out some spare change...I figure if they use it for food, coffee or a bus ticket (the last reason someone had for asking) I have helped them if they don't then that's what they have to live with.
