Proverbs 22:15 (New King James Version)

Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child;
The rod of correction will drive it far from him.

Hi cantbetamed

I have never seen or heard of an adult smacking a child with calmness it is usually an act which comes with anger and frustration - so what do we teach our children? When you are angry or frustrated, hit and smack? I have a 17 year old son and in all of his life I have never laid a finger on him - he is respectful and a really nice guy, doing well in school and generally a nice person with a lot of friends.

What I did instead, as you ask, is I talked to him, I explained why he was wrong to do whatever it was that he had done and when he was younger I asked him what he thought should be his punishment. He used to set his own, he would hand over his favourite toy or game and I would hold it for a week.

I dont write a lot on here, I am always lurking around having a nosey tho lol and I dont want to come across as preaching but there are other ways.

Regards
J

Good on you Charlie.....you are the parent and you want only to keep your children safe at any cost....Its a parent duty to their children...that is how life has turned, i feel sad for children growing up they wont get to play out doors the way i did in my neighbourhood, or talk to people on the street without fear.hug

Nuala,
You have many children right? Are they able to enjoy a simple childhood without fear of violence?

I live in a very small town population 550, so I basically know everyone and have lived here my entire life. I don't lock my car doors at night, don't have to worry about violence on a daily basis. My children are able to ride their bikes and play outside without fear for their immediate safety, but I don't allow them to play unsupervised because anything can still happen.

Three weeks ago a man down the street from me barricaded himself, wife and two small children in the family's home. The wife managed to contact police and there was a subsequent 8 hour standoff at gunpoint. The man drank himself into a drunken stupor and passed out in the house and thank god the wife & children escaped unharmed. The man in question was taken into custody and put into a phsyciatric ward for evaluation. These were people who had moved into the new development and I have no idea as to their identity.

It just goes to show that even in small towns there are isolated incidents of violence, it's everywhere.
