I only know that when I went to school, we were told that the British felt insulted when they were called European. That was then, maybe my teacher was right, then. Maybe she was wrong! But I always tried to give the British that respect, as I was taught. I certainly did not mean to offend anyone. We were taught that the reason Britain did not want to be called European, was because of the hostility with France!! So, if I am wrong, blame my teacher!!
