You can save on your electricity .. by turninig off the heaters when not in use.. and vaccuming the coils of the refrigerator..... it increases the efficiency.
i just wish people would atleast take note of the situation we are stuck in.. and do little everyday.. might make a big difference.... cos no govt can do that for us
Place something in your toilet tank(eg. a brick or a filled water bottle) to help you use less flushing water.
Use a rain barrel to collect natural rain for plants & out door rinsing.
Use the sun wisely. Open & close the curtains according to the sunny side of the house to help control the indoor temperature & Use less heating.
Insulate your house! A house with poor insulation can use up to 60% more heat % air cooling than a well insulated one. Pay attention to caulking around the outside of windows & doors as well.
Check your fridge seals. Use a dollar by placing it in the door and trying to run it through the seal. If it slides through the door easily, it's time to replace the seal... saving you money & electricity.
Rake your grass. Dead grass causes strain on your yard & poor drainage... causing you to have to water & feed more.
Have local species of plants installed in the garden & around the house. They're naturally situated to grow with the weather & soil of the area & require less attention & resources. Companion planting can also be used to slip herbs, fruits & little edibles into the garden... free food is good, too!
Take more baths. An "average" shower uses approx 1/3 more water than a bath.
Recycle & learn what can be recycled. By recycling, we're controlling not only the use of resources but also the overhead costs of production! It actually helps to save money to reuse our resources!
Do not throw away batteries or used oils. Most garage/shops will take them in for recycling, for you.
Start a compost pile. It's very simple & hands free. Simply put all your precooked, non meats into a compost pile & come spring you will have a natural & free source of nutrients for the yard. It keeps chemicals out of your garden & feeds the trees & plants for free.
Use vinegar more. It can be used to clean almost anything ... and it's even a natural softener for use in the rinse cycle! (it's excellent for removing "stinky" clothing smells)
Buy wisely. Check labels & pay attention to things like recycling codes & ingredients.
Use more fluorescent bulbs. They use less power & can produce a an array of colours & levels of brightness. The tend to last much longer, as well.
