December 2007
I woke up this day to the smell of freshly brewed coffee. I went to the kitchen, poured myself a nice big cup and sat it on the table. I heard the paperboy putting my morning paper in the box. I got my paper and went back to the kitchen to enjoy my steaming hot cup of coffee and looked at the front page. MERRY CHRISTMAS.
As I read through the front page I noticed that some readers had placed Christmas greeting to our military men and women in service to our country. It made me think back to over thirty years ago.
I was a young man barely out of high school. I was one of thousands of young men and women in the military. I too was one of those who were in a far off country on Christmas day. I reflected on that Christmas day many years ago.
It made me remember that I was a warrior. I swore an oath to my God and country. I made my oath and I lived by that oath. I honestly did not know why I had to be in this foreign country or what the reasons were for us to be there. BUT I swore an oath and I would live up to my oath and do my duty.
In reading these greetings today I thought about these young men and women who are, as I was, in a far off country on Christmas day. I wondered if they had the same feelings that I had so many years ago. These words came to me and I wish to share them with you.
I am a warrior. I serve in the forces that guard and protect my country and I am prepared to give my life in their defense. My God and country are my life. My faith and allegiance are to my oath. I am a soldier, sailor, airman, marine, I am an American warrior.
I have fought in place with names like Iwo Jima, Normandy, Incheon, An Khe, Beruit, Tehran. In each place I preformed my duty to the best of my ability. We were sent there to help our friends and allies become from oppression.
I have suffered the slings and arrows of my enemies. I have suffered the wounds of battle. Both physical and mental. I have seen my brothers and sisters wounded beyond the point of recovery.
I have watch as the great symbol of our nation has covered the remains of one of my comrades. Yet still I remain. I am a warrior. I have my duty. My oath is strong. I will remain to fulfill my obligation. First and foremost, I am an American fighting man and I am prepared to give my life in defense of my country. Now and forever.
Many have come before me. Many will come long after I am gone. The battles will continue. The oath will remain the same. The Untied States warrior can and never will die. The warrior will remain.
May everyone take a moment and remember our veterans and those who still serve. To all veterans of every country. Thank you for your service to your country. From one veteran to another.
