Ironic as it may be, I was attending a course on suicide intervention techniques in Victoria B.C on that September morning. I remember thinking that I was watching the beginning of the end......
Thankfully it was not, and I returned home to remain on alert for any further developments. T'was a tense week or so for myself and my family. I was ready for damn near anything and would have gone to New York if they would have called, but it was not necessary.
Anyone who has worked in emergency services assumes certain risks when they put on the uniform, and when something of this magnitude occurs that is so far away and obviously out of my control, I too am grateful. Grateful that I am not alone in this commitment to serve and protect.
Thank the next E.S worker you bump into today or tommorow, we sometimes forget ourselves what can happen in the blink of an eye, cuz when everybody's runnin out, we're the ones that are runnin in, no matter how bad she all looks......
Here we are well into January and most people have all had a good taste of winter road conditions.....I thought most folks around here by now will have adopted the practice of just staying home if the roads turned bad overnight, but apparently they haven't. I realize that people do have jobs, commitments to kids, spouse ,etc....But there comes a time when you need to ask yourself if taking that chance out on those icy roads is REALLY worth it??? I am used to doing my job of pulling folks out of their rolled and twisted wrecks on a regular basis. What I never get used to is sometimes ridiculous reasons some people give for being out there in the first place. Trust me when I say I've heard them ALL.....sadly enough some pay for those decisions dearly....I don't think anything can replace a decision to stay put and stay safe rather than putting you and yours in the hospital or worse......Plz folks...from a responder on the front lines........THINK ABOUT IT!
I geuss I was sleeping at the key board the other morning when I responded to a forum post and typed my real name at the bottom of my message.(big deal) This person asked me if I wasn't concerned about having my pic up and now they had my first NAME. Oh my goodness. The only response I could come up with was this.........if any one is lookin 4 me .....bring it on....I'm not very hard to find in this small town. Probably enough people around to point you in my direction We can either go have a coffee and be friends, or if you are lookin for trouble then you had better have some help. I am not to young to remember when a mans handshake and word were all you needed. My father(RIP) used to say: "If you are afraid to give me your name then you better be afraid of me." He was a landowner who conducted most of his business that way till the day he died. I don't like to think we have to live in a world we need to hide in. I AM CANADIAN!!! Darrell
Curly, I wonder if you seek out these man-bashing tid-bits or do you write them yourself?? They are beyond hilarious and some parts of them TRUE! If you do write them then you should seek out a publisher, cuz I'm sure that you could write an entire book. I must get my printer up and running before these gems dissapear. Just when I thought I'd seen and heard them all I look deeper into these forums and pull up ones that keep me laffin! DON'T ever leave curlywolf, cuz if you do I surely will to...Luc...
I used to think, that aside from actual military combat, that I had the most important job in the world.....after 15 yrs. and undergoing treatment for chronic P.T.S.D , I'm not sure I would make the same choice again...... I do have the highest respect for teachers....
Actually Mort....Have you ever cornered a beaver?? (a real beaver) not the two legged ones....I am from the B.C interior and have had 2 run-ins with beavers and both times un-armed. (I was fishing)..And I've sworn not to let it happen again.
