Waitangi Day is the day on this date back in 1840 that a Treaty was signed between New Zealand and England. It was signed at Waitangi in Northland, New Zealand giving the Maori the same rights (so they said) as the pakeha (whites of New Zealand). This of course didn't happen although it was supposed to.
It has been proven that the Maori version of the document differs to the English version and once it was signed that was that. Years of controversy followed once the natives of New Zealand found out what the actual deal was. It has cost the government of New Zealand dearly, paying for Maori land rights, etc.
Ok we Kiwi's can travel and stay in the UK these days without any problem but back then the Treaty was just another reason to make the British Empire as big as it possibly could.
Still we New Zealander's could have had it much worse. Becoming a part of the Netherlands, for example. I'd rather not think about that one too much.
To New Zealand.
