I have wondered this for a long time, this is dedicated to a guyfriend because he eats bambi and i don'tlaugh

I have always thought of hunting as a sport, for the life of me though i don't see the sport in putting corn in containers on a regular basis so the deer will trust, once that trust is earned through the feeding process there is a slaughter, that to me is not hunting, wonder why it is considered hunting to you men????????

I used to hunt back in high school and stuff. But after the experience of "hunting men" overseas...its lost its allure. Nowadays, I *might* be interested if Bambi carried an M4 or a shotgun...personally, I just look at it as a slaughter....but: it is a free country and I understand how some folks just like to get out into the wilderness and play the game of hunting for fun...

but my question is, is how is it "hunting" if the animals are comming to a trusted feeding place? hunting in my eyes has always been considered as tracking and finding in different locations. was just wondering, i doubt many can or will explain this.

Well Irish...you are right: its entrapment, basically. You could say its murder. I don't see the sport in it. Some folks, I think, just love guns and shooting and want something "living" to shoot at....some primeval instinct inside of humans that makes them want to kill something. For others, its simply exercising their "right" to hunt. They dont care what they actually hunt, they just want to *hunt*....no real easy answer for ya girl.....

I do not enjoy hunting but my dad was seriously into it. For many years he leased property, built stands, installed feeders, the whole thing. He would spend countless hours freezing his but off sitting in a stand waiting for just the right deer to come along. He didn't just shoot the first one that showed up. He was looking for the big buck, the trophy rack.
Many years, he went the whole season without shooting anything although he had many opportunities. At the end of the season he would go ahead and bag his limit because our whole family enjoyed eating vennison and because he was dedicated to the sport. Thinning of the herd is necessary to prevent over-population and starvation.
I also know many hunters who do the tracking through the woods thing. I don't know any hunters who enjoy shooting baby deer (or bambi).
Hope that answers your question.

Although I will add this: when you are hunting game without baiting, just hiking and covering ground and you get a chance at rabbits and such, things that can move fast and are unencumbered, you could call that traditional hunting. They move fast, have a shot at survival and you have to have very good hand/eye coordination and skill with the gun to get them. I'd call that hunting, I suppose...they just have to have a fair shot at getting away...

I know people that have a salt block to attract deer and will shoot them out of season. This is bad but cows do not have a season. Why do deer have a kill time and not cattle. I have strong fealings about what is happing to our food , I'll spare you that , but do ask yourself 'what am I putting in my mouth?'

Hey Hondo, I wasn't worried. I appreciate your perspective and was just trying to be respectful.
BTW, thanks for your service. I haven't had the experience myself but my dad was infantry, WWII, and I know the toll it takes on a man.

roll eyes I don't kill Bambi, but I will take his daddy, or his mom. And guess what, I'm not a man.

Areas where hunting is not allowed, or where people just don't do it, the deer population suffers greatly from malnutrition and disease. If you think the deer don't have a chance against a person with a gun, you try sitting in a tree stand for hours to get a shot at one, only to have him stay just out of sight till after dark. Or flick his tail up and run the second you move your hand toward the trigger. It's not as easy as putting out a bucket of corn and waiting for the slaughter. Deer are never that trusting. And besides that's illegal.

Oh and Dennis, salt licks are put out more for the deers health than to attract them. Some guys like big racks, it's good for that. grin

HondoLaneNJ: Its all good Kansan: at least you eat what you hunt. A lot of knuckleheads here in Jersey just blow the deer away and leave them where they fall...I'd like to shoot them! At least butcher it and give it to some needy family...

I've seen carcases with the antlers removed. There is no organisation or program promoting this idear, and you can not just go to someones door and say 'hey you want this?'

I don't hunt, but respect others that do - perhaps that is the Michigan in me.

Although I do remember the news stories from back home. Hunting season would open, hunters get drunk, and end up shooting each other. Those orange vests do look like deer for some reason...uh oh

Perhaps salt licks are somthing other than the large block of salt my uncle put on the less traveled part of his property. His intention was to attract and kill. I do not agree with this idear and I am sure it was not for the deer's health.

LOL most guys like big racks.

My uncle will hunt out of season and complain that his neighbor does the same, WTF.

I do agree that some hunting is necesary to keep the population down but 'easy kill' is not hunting.
