i have volunteered in the county jail for nearly ten years.
each year at Christmas a group of people at a local church, fashion construction paper stockings, decorate each one and fill them with love, a piece of candy, some printed encouraging words, a piece of paper a stamp and an envelope and a pair of sock. no small task the jail houses about 1500 inmates. each man and woman receive one.
they are delivered to the jail, those who made them are not present, and folks like me go through the jail and hand each one to a man.
this is one of my favorite moments of the year.
.........
several months later at a group discussion one of the men. quiet, untidy, long nails, worn face, eyes that had seen too much, and a spirit the carried the weight of all he had experienced. a quiet man that never spoke. asked if he could speak.... of course.
he had taken the paper the stamp and the envelope and written his family.....
they responded .. they had believed him dead for 12 years....
