Ask questions. Pay attention to the questions he asks you? Read his profile. Does he have more than one picture? Is he trying to IM you right away. Ask about the town he lives in? Some people say they are from a certain place but it's not real. If he seems to good to be true he might be. Don't want you to be discouraged just be wise.

Just take your time with him. Is he someone that lives in a nearby state? Does he ask specific questions about you? If he starts asking about income or whether you want to get married in the first conversation that might be a red flag. Go by your instinct also. There are a lot of spammers out there, and a lot of great people too.
