It is disrespectful to fly the American flag at night without a light on it. If you had a flag outside would you go through the expense of digging a hole in the ground for electricity or would you say, it doesn't matter if there's a light on it. All that matters is that I'm flying the flag.

Technically, it should be taken down at sunset and folded (never touching the ground). But by todays standards, I honestly don't see the harm in leaving it up overnight.
There is no problem leaving it up overnight as long as there is a light on it. The question is, would you dig a hole in the ground so that a light was on the flag

Personally...yes...But I don't believe there is any law that demands you do so (Don't quote me on that)
You're right. There isn't a "law" to do it but there are guidelines.
I drove by a car dealer one day who had a large flag outside his business. The flag was tattered and torn and it upset me that he was flying it like that. I was sure he could afford to get a new flag. When a flag is torn you are suppoesd to take it to the American Legion and they will dispose of it properly. I wrote to the car dealer and asked him to replace the flag. And guess what - he did.

Good for you! The Flag should be flown with honor.
