Personally, I wouldn't waste my time..... nor, more importantly, hard earned money.
There was a time when the unions had more clout but, sadly, Arthur Scargill in his infinite wisdom (and good intentions) took things a little too far and eventually undermined the credibility and integrity of the unions. This gave Margaret Thatcher the perfect opportunity, which she exploited without reserve, to all but completely destroy the unions.
They have very little clout left. Its a shame, there is now much to discourage joining a union as a result but then if nobody subscribes they can't re-group their strength.... its a catch 22, of course, my friend.
I have just been through 3 years of hell (and I truly mean HELL and my union was the most woefully hopeless waste of space imaginable - I was finally forced from my job and the union couldn't care less).
If you have problems in future, the best contacts are CAB and ACAS.

I was a member of the RMT and they took no nonsense from our employers, went on strike a couple of times and when I got fired with their help I got my job back at the appeal and became untouchable, well worth the monthly membership fee.

Private sector Trade Unions have been smashed.
Groups of workers in the private sector don't strike together for collective rights, they sue instead(often wrongly)on the grounds of an injury or a perceived dicrimination - being that you're male and if you're white, too, then you best break a leg and claim compensation at the expense of your fellow workers and for the gain of some low-life lawyer.
Crystal29: Join....without a doubt....these big profit making retailers wont be happy till theyve screwed us workers into the ground....
Now here is something that Chrystal and I do agree on. I am a branch secretary for the EIS lecturers union at the college where I work, I know exactly what people mean when they get frustrated by the union and the union leadership sometimes. Seems as though they are only interested in their careers, but I know that our conditions would be a whole lot worse if we didn't have a union. I would suggest you definitely join but get involved. Don't just passively hand over your dues.
