I have my own thoughts on egoism and they fall within the realm of what you said.
The book of revelations states in 13:18; "Let him who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is "MAN'S" number. His number is 666.
In this context, 'MAN'S' means not one man, but mankind in general. "The beast" is not just one man rising to power. It is a collective consciousness held by all of mankind.
There is the 'Christ'...The highest level of conscious awareness or enlightenment achieved, in other words, the God conscience.
.. and there is the "ANTI" christ...that which leaves no room for enlightenment.
The ego is the house of the seven deadly sins but it was constructed by fear. Fear is the deadliest of sins. All of man's pride, greed, selfishness, vanity, gluttonous behavior which motivates his atrocious acts of evil derive from the ego. It is the goal of the Buddhists to eliminate ego. When you eliminate ego, you eliminate 'the beast'.
