I have my three pots double dug and good manure in so I`m ready to go, one of the plots is based on an African key hole garden, which I have also built in a local school [great fun] I need one here as a control model. only one job to do is to make them all chicken proof as my chooks love a bit of fresh turned soil and fresh veg , we will start our planting this saturday the kids have their own plot for sunflowers they have a tallest competition I give the the strawberries and carrots and some fast growing veg like lettuce and it keeps them interested, welcome to Greentassels feel free to add your input , Duncan .

Yes I have a bit of land to play with, and have considered raising chickens.. But decided against it. They really are very destructive and need a good patch for themselves.. unless you can let them roam..

I did wonder about quails though, as they love being cooped up and dont need bringing in at night..

An internet friend always builds rolling cages for her chickens, which seems also a nice option..

I have settled for some bantams, which decided for themselves that they roost in the goat house.

they can have a go at the lettuce, but I just put chicken wire over it. Bantams are not as destructive as there larger relatives and they will roost in trees.

Mine actually prefer to hang around in the ducks house, once the ducks are out for the day dunno confused but they are happy little things grin

I will be doing my final plant out on Saturday the squashes, marrows, sweetcorn etc.

The beans, spuds, salads, brassicas, onions, garlic, peas, leeks, chards, beetroot, swedes, turnips etc are all out grin

I have apricots for the first time, does anyone know when they will be ripe they are about 3/4 the size of shop bought ones and green.

Looking forwards to my first cherries and first fruit from some old apples from seedsavers.

that is a wonderful picture thumbs up can I make one observation from experience, if chicken wire is put underneath the pen as on the floor, then they chickens will get the grass but wont dig holes. This also stops mink from getting in, the pieces of wood around the base are not sufficient for this.

As a chicken lover, who came home to find her ducks attacked by mink I can speak from experience and say that this is something that you want to avoid seeing, it is a horrible long drawn out death for the birds and a nasty find for you and your family. teddybear

mink can also be a problem as can feral ferrets sink a 4inch wavin pipe in the ground about a foot long and cap the end off you can buy the cap at the builders merchants ,put six inches of water into the end of it a bit of mesh on the top with an opening in it so the mink can get in .bait the trap with a bit of smelly fish and you should get them ,one important thing to remember is to put every thing under soil and use gloves before you touch it human scent makes them run a mile same as rats, bury all bait jars and traps before you set them and dont let your scent get on them and you will have sucess in the same word check them daily as its not fair to let anything suffer a lingering death pest or not they deserve a swift end .

Quail are such an easy bird to start with if your keeping them in a rabbit hutch remove part of the roof and fit polycarb sheeting to allow more light in and suppliment their diet with fresh greens. The eggs are really nice pickled ,once boiled for 5 mins put the eggs in a jar and cover them with white vinegar for 12 hours this dissolves the shell leaving the membrane to remove by hand ,then simply cover with pickeling vinegar leave a couple of weeks then eat.Another thing Quail are fully grown between 6-8 weeks and easy to pluck, to clean them out i use a tea spoon , killing is easy thou you might have to steel yourself to do the first one or two ,the most humane way is to cut their heads off hold the bird firmly in your left hand and lay the bird on a chopping board and with a sharp knife cut its head off do this on the draining board so as to allow you to hold the bird over the sink until it has finished bleeding ,keep a hold of it until the nerves have stopped then pluck and clean it .I allow 2 per portion for a main course wrapped in bacon and roast for twenty Minutes , bon apipite.
