Our little fella is as cute as and we got him for free from the RSPCA. He follows verbal cues and is a lead line pony.. so I could jog beside shorty when she was learning to ride, and just tell our pony what to do..

turn right, turn left, trot, canter, and so on.

Horses are expensive thier feed thier worming crap , the farrier you have to get them shod have their teeth filed and if eva they escape & get into an orchard eat all the young unripe apples & pears (this actually is a true event bloody horse )well they get colic which if let untreated means they bloat up & die in agony well the vet bills are hundreds for anything & everything !!

feeling educated Yet?

I've been very fortunate with ours.

I agist and thats $30/month per animal. Which is very cheap.

Because they are on 80acres and have NO competition we rarely have to supplimentary feed them. Have to take a 'love' feed out to them though, or they'd never speak to us again laugh I get a bale of lucine and chaff it myself (I stick it through a mulcher I got really cheap and put it in a bin)I mix it with a bit of molassis or apple cider & garlic vinegar (I make my own)and they love it.

Shorty only rides in the paddock so I dont have ours shod, which cuts down on alot of expense. They've both got very good feet so our farrier comes out about 4 times a year and gives em a trim.

Because Sparky is little, I can get the two of them wormed from one tube of paste!!!

So its 2 animals....

$60/month agistment
$20/month feed
$25/quarter for farrier
$16/quarter for worming

You guys can do the math ... but to be honest if you have to call a vet its literally $150 for him to walk through the gate!!!

Cost of two paddock ponies/horses not unreasonable, love and enjoyment gained PRICELESS grin

Martia, too many people in it strictly for the money, who dont know what they're doing.

Breeding inferior stock.

Frustrates the hell out of me.

I'm actually on the lookout for either a sir tristram or clos up northern dancer line mare at the mo.
That northern dancer/sir ivor x works gold for middle distance/staying horses

Trying to breed me a melb cup horse!laugh

It can be very expensive shell, but extremely rewarding shell.

We stand our boy, but all foals we breed, if we dont keep, only get sold to friends where we can go + visit them.wave

Velvet, I love that you keep in touch with your babies. A friend is starting to breed from one of her mares, hopefully in the future she'll have a great line of endurance horses.

As my friend said (and I think you're the same) people have to be good enough to have one of her horses, not the other way round.teddybear

In response to: Jd, u nilly forgot split enz too.

Phar lap, what a horse. Still damn chokes me up what the mafioso in america did to him.

After that win in agua caliente handicap, he proved he was the greatest racehorse in the world.

I still cant believe hes not in the hall of fame with northern dancer, secreteriat, silent witness, carbine, cigar and seattle slew.

The horse was a freak.
I still think the best staying horses are either bred in, or have new zealand bloodlines.(they reckon its the limestone of waikato!)

Do u remember a horse named Bonecrusher?

That cox plate he won over our waverly star.
The race of the century.

I was there that day, and when they turned for home they both took off from the pack, neck and neck for the whole 4 furlong straight.

What a race.

Well I am sorry you are comepletly wrong about Phar Lap he was NOT got at by the Mafia he died from Arsnic poisoning it was a common conditioner for horses in that era before they swabbed Poor old Tommy Woodcock gave it to the Horse over a long time to keep the horse at his peak for racing in the US! it was at that time nothing much was known about the long term effects of that
incidious mixture Thank goodness Tommy was not alive to see the outcome of the sample of hair they took from the horse!it would have broken his heart.I met him in Tas just before he died and he was a gentle lovely old man.
Bone Crusher was just that! as the epic battle with Our Waveney Star up the straight was unreal and it broke Stars heart he Never one another race.

So the Americans were unfairly blamed for Phar Laps death did not happen.I have been in Racing and Training for over 35yrs that was my life all gone now.
