I heard somewhere (and I have no reference for this) that the meat industry is so inefficient that if we all turned vegetarian we would need only half the area of land that we are currently using for food production to adequately feed everyone in the world, and only a quarter if we all turned vegan.
I've also heard that people go hungry in third world countries growing crops to support Western meat industries.
I don't know how true/accurate this information is, but a sobering thought all the same.
