I'm a former Home Depot employee too. It was a second job for me. I was a cashier, and the metrics system was a joke. So much pressure to get a high rating for the number of customers rung up and your timer's running while you're ringing up a large purchase...and even while you're waiting for a price from another associate.
I felt that our store was sorely undermanned. Not enough help in the departments, and half the guys that were hired were teenagers who didn't have a clue and especially never learned the work ethic to provide customer service. Really burned the cashiers when they couldn't get the help they needed & we were always the ones to get chewed on when a customer had a bad experience.
It was also a little belittling when the head cashier or store manager didn't stick up for his/her cashiers in front of the customer...they'd wait until after the customer left & THEN tell you you'd done the right thing. To me it would've been nice if they'd said that in front of the customer.
Luckily now I only step into a Home Depot as a customer. Unfortunately they're not all set up the same & I have to wander the store to find what I want. Hopefully wherever you're at now is treating you well.
