The first reason is that men form around the world(some who claim to be from USA) contact women thru IM and it is a senseless waste of time. That however, can be remedied by blocking the individuals.
The most important reason I turned min off is because everytime I got IM'd i got a ton of virsuses attached and had to reboot and clean my pc. Nothing is worth the time and trouble of dealiong with the junk attached to whatever is out there waitng on this site.
