Hey, thanks for your post, it hits a string here (no, no it's not because of your profile !)! I'm just back from a travel in Cuba, had interesting talks with some locals about this. Lots of them are just longing to enter into the rat race you describe (comforting to hear that we share similar lifestyles in different parts of the world ), but their ambitions are simply made impossible by the Castro regime.
They lack about everything we consider obvious, e.g. there is no money nor material to fix sth that is broken, food is often short of supply. Still, some of them prefer to keep socialism like it is as there is no pressure to stand out of the crowd in terms of wealth, and they can survive on the most basic necessities.
Anyhow I realised that I could not live there, when returning I was consciously enjoying the everyday comfort I got so used to, I was even happy to be able to re-enter the rat race (wake up 6am, back home 8 pm, I guess I'm more of an evening person LOL).
I know that what is said by sassinspain is the cure for this kind of disease (take life in your own hands!), the holiday I describe is nothing more than an aspirine (Alka Seltzer?). But hey, who doesn't need an aspirine from time to time...
