You may have the girth title but the depth one is mine!!! Preposteriousness goes very far down in my case! And it is only January 10, I have a year to perfect it!
I think this poll allows all points of view to merge....you can allow or disallow without making any more sense and you can question the motives of any country in the world without causing offence as nobody understands anyway!
These are not the adjectives used by anyone decent. Even if you thought any of that stuff was true you should have shown a bit more class. However you would rather post that instead of dealing with any of the substance of Mindfful's remarks.
What kind of person feels the need to lower the tone of debate so much? Is it that you don't want to have to think?
I have read all the material in the last 33 pages and found a lot of ideas of interest - even in the posters I totally disagree with. But this kind of stuff is just unmannerly
Spain's leaders had an election. The people wanted the war stopped. They voted for the party that said they would withdraw. That party won. They kept their promise. Cut and run?? That is democracy.
There was a very good documentary shot during the coup attempt in 2002. It was local opposition elements backed by the CIA and the tacit support of the US embassy. Worth watching. They got great footage. it was called "Chavez inside the coup" I think
I wouldn't like you to think that my remarks about interests were directed at you personally. They were not, any more than any other contributions I have made to this debate. I wish your son well and hope he comes back safe to you. Ideally soon.
I am not sure what you mean by us making change....it is the desire to shake up a part of the world and re-order it in a particular image that is at the root of much of this trouble. I am not looking for someone to come in and sort out the world's problems....other than the UN if the major member states would only back its authority properly.
Are you implying my posture is preposterous? My mother made me stand up straight! I could have been Homo Erectus were I not Fallingman!! Ooops.....that could cause me some difficulties with the less well-informed homophobe!
What has being new got to do with it. Either her opinions are valid or they are not. There is no seniority in the club. It isn't even a club. Also, I don't think anybody has thrown anything.
Fair point. But you have to understand that it is hard for us minnows to be condescended to all the time. Selflessness is not required but you don't have to tell us it is in our own good when it is in fact in YOUR own good.
An interesting post - mixing fact fiction and assertion.
Yes US is world power due to its resourceful people. There probably are those who are jealous. There are more who admire and aspire to the same things as US. That doesn't confer virtue on the US actions any more than it makes them wrong. Might is neither right nor wrong...it is just might.
Of course Governments have not protested the results. Except for a few remarks by Russia and others (probably Chavez too!) they stay clear of such comment.....as they are not mad!! Ordinary people around the world and across the US, not being shackled by such considerations feel free to call a spade a spade.
Yes Chavez is a provocateur....and a show off. However, there was an attempted coup against him with obvious US support and he may have a reason to feel peeved. If your government conspires to prevent the democratic election of leftist governments around the world can you be surprised when leftist governments are hostile to the US??
Yes, the US has protested about Zimbabwe
I think the bit about oil is a very cozy and inaccurate history of oil. I don't know how many countries have nationalised US oil without compensation. A short list I reckon. However, you might find rather more States where democracy has been undermined by the oil companies to support their interests. The best example would be Iran in the 1950s.
The theory that the world expects the US to fix its problems has some validity in that there are few solutions possible without US endorsement. But frankly most of us do our best to sort out our own problems. US involvement can be a great help but it is usually tied in with self interest (and why not....just let's admit it) and a lot of the world role of the US is instead of the UN.....a body systematically undermined by the US for many years since it slipped out of their direct control. Setting up altruistic world peace bodies is good - but apparently only so long as they are not judging US actions or applying the same rules to everyone.
In response to your last point - the treatment of Guantanamo prisoners who were citizens of US allies is a small example of that kind of high handedness. However that is a particularly ugly feature of an ugly administration and it would be unfair to characterise US policy in general this way.
RE: humour and likelyhood of danger
What an insult! I thought everyone was terrified of me. I have worked so hard at generating fear and loathing.
