Interesting read on inaccuracies of medieval mapping practices
On August 1, 2006 a beautifully illustrated book by Alessandro Scafi, dedicated to those medieval maps, was published by University Of Chicago Press: "Il paradiso in terra - Mappe del giardino dell'Eden (Heaven on earth - Maps of the garden of Eden)". The scholar discloses that the purpose of such maps, far from “practical" navigation, was the location of sacred places of the Bible. Theologians especially argued that the Garden of Eden had really existed and still was extant at the remote borders of the known world.
"The depiction of paradise came to play an important role in mapping expressing a vision founded on the Bible. The world maps produced in monasteries and cathedrals of Western Europe were not, however, exposition of theology, pastoral documents and statements of devotion, unlike our modern and scientific representations of the Earth, neither were they instruments of religious propaganda or preaching in visual form. They were rather representations of the world according to a particular concept, a concept that took account of the text of Scripture and the teachings of the Christian faith. Assessed according to their criteria, medieval maps of the world were actually less "scientific" than any other document. (...) It is 'important to understand that to Christian scholars of late antiquity and the Middle Ages the Bible provided the key to all forms of knowledge. In the Sacred Scriptures was certainly the spiritual and religious, but also the most authoritative guide on the creation of the world and history of the human race. The Bible might not provide a great deal of geographical information, but it was the key reference in the study of cosmology, philosophy and history" (Alessandro Scafi 2007).
The Occupy Wall Street demonstrators are shining a light on one of the most serious problems facing the United States -- the greed and power of Wall Street. Now is the time for the American people to demand that the president and Congress follow that light -- and act. The future of our economy is at stake.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Senator Bernie Sanders

The Occupy Wall Street protests are shining a national spotlight on the most powerful, dangerous and secretive economic and political force in America.
If this country is to break out of this horrendous recession and create the millions of jobs we desperately need, if we are going to create a modicum of financial stability for the future, there is no question but that the American people are going to have to take a very hard look at Wall Street and demand fundamental reforms. I hope these protests are the beginning of that process.
Click here to read my recent op-ed at the Huffington Post.
Let us never forget that as a result of the greed, recklessness and illegal behavior on Wall Street, this country was plunged into the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Millions of Americans lost their jobs, homes and life savings as the middle class underwent an unprecedented collapse. Sadly, despite all the suffering caused by Wall Street, there is no reason to believe that the major financial institutions have changed their ways, or that future financial disasters and bailouts will not happen again.
The question now becomes: how do we change the financial system so that it works for all Americans, not just the top one percent?
Here are several proposals that I am working on:
1) If a financial institution is too big to fail, it is too big to exist. Today, the six largest financial institutiions in America have assets equivalent to 65% of the United States' GDP - $9.4 trillion dollars. It is time to take a page from Teddy Roosevelt and break up these behemoths so that there will be real competition in the financial industry and, when big banks fail again, there will be no need to bail them out.
2) Put a cap on credit card interest rates to end usury. When credit card companies charge 25- or 30-percent interest rates they are not engaged in the business of "making credit available" to their customers. They are involved in extortion, usury and loan-sharking.
3) The Federal Reserve needs to provide small businesses in America with the same low-interest loans it gave to foreign banks. When Wall Street collapsed, the Fed lent out $16 trillion in low interest loans to central banks around the world and every major financial institution in this country. Now, at a time when small businesses can't get the loans they need, it is time for the Fed to create millions of American jobs by providing low-interest loans directly to small businesses.
4) Stop Wall Street oil speculators from artificially increasing gasoline and heating oil prices. Wall Street speculators are buying and selling billions of barrels of oil in the energy futures market with no intention of using a drop for any purpose other than to make a quick buck. We have got to end excessive oil speculation and bring needed relief to American consumers in lower oil and gas prices.
5) Demand that Wall Street invest in the job-creating productive economy, instead of gambling on worthless derivatives. The American people have got to make it crystal clear to Wall Street that the era of excessive speculation is over. The "heads, bankers win; tails, everyone else loses" financial system must end.
6) Establish a Wall Street speculation fee on credit default swaps, derivatives, stock options and futures. Both the economic crisis and the deficit crisis are a direct result of the greed and recklessness on Wall Street. Establishing a speculation fee would reduce gambling on Wall Street, encourage the financial sector to invest in the productive economy, and significantly reduce the deficit without harming average Americans.

Occupy MN gets law enforcement OK for occupation of Government Plaza By Jessica Lussenhop published: Thu., Oct. 6 2011 @ 9:38AM
So far, so nice for Occupy MN. ?In a series of meetings held over the past couple of days, Occupy MN organizers have received tentative approval for their plans to camp out in the Hennepin County Government Center plaza starting tomorrow at 9 a.m.
The plaza is public property, but organizers still met with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Department and the Minneapolis Police Department to discuss their plans. The protestors are converging in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement going on in New York City, and could be there for days if not weeks.
For now, at least, it appears all parties are playing it Minnesota-nice.
Occupy Wall Street has been raging on for three weeks, drawing an estimated 20,000 attendees. Solidarity occupations have popped up in Chicago, San Francisco and Boston, and barely two weeks ago, a group of student in Duluth conceptualized Occupy MN.
Lead organizer Osha Karow says talks with police have been cordial and productive.
?The original posting to the Occupy MN website praises the New York protesters for "demonstrating against corporate greed and the injustices that we face as the 99%," referring to the 99 percent of people they claim are ruled by the other 1 percent. They announced initial plans to occupy the Fed, but later changed the target to the Government Plaza.
Attendance estimates for the event have varied wildly from 200 people to 1,000, though 972 have RSVP'd so far on the Occupy MN Facebook page. Protestors will converge at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning to set up and do workshops, at 5 p.m. there will be an official kick-off rally, and at 7 p.m. the first meeting of the Occupy MN general assembly will take place.
The Hennepin County Sheriff has jurisdiction over the Government Plaza itself, while the Minneapolis police are of course responsible for downtown streets. In meetings with the sheriff, Occupy MN was told they will not need to obtain permits to be there, nor will they be removed so long as they keep things nice and legal. While the sheriff is OK with overnight guests in sleeping bags, things may get a little sticky when it comes to the group's plan to erect a tent city. The sheriff is also iffy about a bank of port-o-potties. Another meeting to iron out these issues is scheduled for this morning.
But so far, so good. Sheriff Rich Stanek was even quoted calling the occupiers "nice people."
A lot can happen in a short amount of time and Occupy MN is in it for the long haul. According to Osha Karow, one of the lead organizers, they do not plan on leaving until Occupy Wall Street's general assembly has had their demands met. We'll keep you updated as the protest continues to evolve.
