You are absolutely correct. Eventhough you are married, you would still reach the point asking yourself why you married this person and going through experiences is never ending. When you are already mentally matured, you are also looking for someone who is already matured to take a journey a with you forever.
In my point of view, it is not a matter that you have to be together for years to know if he/she is a right person for you. It is how mature, emotionally and mentally prepared you are to take a lifetime journey with your half. A separation is not only about "irreconcilable differences" but a failure to compromise.
