Oh dear - there is not room on a forum thread to begin to describe the spiritual journey I've been on since the early 90's. Besides - I also believe that everyone must figure it all out for themselves.
Perhaps it will help to reveal that I am a Unitarian Universalist, to the core.
On Moday - tomorrow - all across America many will be celebrating the life of MLK, and the dream he spoke of.
What is your current perception of racial equality in America, in your country (if you are not an American), and across the world (eg. on a global level)?
I believe that although we still have a ways to go, we have made progress in my lifetime - and we are heading in the right direction.
I was not aware that Islam was ramming anything down anyones throats - what do you know of Islam? Are you refering to religious extremists of any flavor, who mainly use religion for purposes it was never really intended for in the first place?
Please be cautious about the way you attack a religion based on what you hear about in the popular press - it is the way we got into this mess, and stay in the mess we are in around the world, in the first place.
I think we can thank the American press for part of this mis-information, along with a few clever (or ignorant, not sure which) quotes from our bold leaders
Makes for a great sound bite when you are in the spot light, you've really screwed up, and you still want to convince the most gullible citizens (the ones who voted for you in the first place) of a reason to go to war for their country
Hold on, I am confused Didn't Saddam and the Iraqis bomb the WTC? I can swear I heard my president say that a time or two. Who is this Bin Laden guy? Does he have a lot of oil fields too? [insert emoticon for sarcasm here]
Seriously, it is really scary what some people out their are being told to believe! I am glad some leaders make decisions based on looking at the evidence and intervening where it makes the most sense.
This posting sounds like you have actually spoken to a lot of people who live, work, and raise families in Iraq. Have you? Has anyone? What choices have they actually been given?
Can anyone provide the numbers of non-insurgent/non-terrorist Iraqis who have been killed in this war so far? Americans only hear about the death of other Americans - and I for one do not know who, or how many, innocent non-American people have lost their lives in this conflict so far.
I often wonder how would we (people living in the USA) feel if [pick a country, any country] invaded America with the goal of finding and neutralizing all of our home-grown terrorists because their leaders believed America's terrorists were a threat to them, and the rest of the world? Could somthing like this happen, hypothetically, if an American-born-and-raised terrorist went to another country and created a level of destruction equal to the WTC? Pretty scary if you ask me - and I hope we have not set a precendence for this approach to 'policing the world' in the future.
At the moment I am pondering India. Many of my friends are from there, and still have family there - so a bit of family hopping would be fun and a great way to be a part of it, rather than just a tourist. From what I've learned so far, it would take a lifetime just to travel India!
Pick #2 - 1-2 weeks on a catamaran wherever there are lots of secluded islands and great snorkeling
Hi Jose, I am back I think the motto that rings true is "distance makes the heart grow fonder". I have a good friend in a really fun relationship, both very busy people until it's time for a vacation - then they meet various places around the world to enjoy their vacations together.
Have not done this yet, and I would be reluctant to try unless I was flexible in where I could live or they were. I would try it for the right person I love all those attractive accents abroad
That would be cool, thanks TikiGuy. Let's see - great snorkel spots, hiking, ecotourism, people I can learn about the rest of the world from, simplicity (no frills), great food, diverse cultures - not necessarily all in one place. I plan to live and travel for many years to come
Galop's would be great, and some times I worry that place is loved to much (eg. getting overrun) - but I've never been.
Gather as many family members and friends that can be there and have my funeral while I am still alive - the theme would be a celebration of all of our lives
AS I understand it, there are companies that intend to profit by producing cloned livestock for a variety of applications. One potential area is food production by optimizing certain production characteristics and minimizing certain weaknesses such as susceptibility to disease. Last I followed this, it was not looking like it would be a profitable enterprise because the technology was not efficient enough. One exception may be the dairy industry and production of hig producers - but even there, we already have so many problems associated with high producing dairy cattle.
Another application was .... get ready for another tangent on this thread .... production of body organs for transplantation OK - I could go on and on about the potential risks here - anyone ever hear of zoonotic diseases?! If not, anyone know the origins of AIDS?!
I think almost everyone would be very worried if we began changing the characteristics of unborn children - and the type of stem cell research with the potential for the greatest benefits is the stuff that leads to applications to living human beings, not preconception. This is a very interesting moral and ethical debate, and it is pretty important not to confuse the science and it's applications - like so many of our sound-bite-loving politicians and media provokers are guilty of.
Wow, this is a wonderfully diverse group! I am in a book club, always looking for new books to consider, even if we mostly drink wine and eat good food and catch up on each others lives more than discuss the books
RE: The Big Bang vs. Religion - Discuss
Thanks Lionhearted! Let's keep at it until we can help all the others understand the difference.
