You need to go through the first stage . While 'Automatic Updates' is running , you can not rename the folder . You need to start 'Automatic Updates' after you rename the folder .

Have you heard of a folder called SoftwareDistribution . Problems in this folder could cause windows to freeze or to crash . It has been a common cause of frequent problems after a windows update .
If you are running windows xp : click start , click common computer , find your hard drive which is usually C: , right click on that ( C:) , click on properties , click on tools , click on check now , click in both options , click start . you will be informed that your computer will carry out the request the next time you restart it . Choose yes or no . Click OK
Later when you restart your computer and after you log into windows your PC will go through a fault finding process which will take a little while . Waite untill ithe process is finished . This may resolve your problem . If not you may have to carry out another procedure . Let me know .
