For me its not an issue because of the relationship developed between two people/adults.
From my experience, I make it clear to the children, I am not a mother and I can be a really good friend etc... I generally set boundaries so that I am not depended on, particularily if we live alone. If we live together, I have then accepted the commitment to him and his family.
No different from me having a cat, if you have issues with cats - then move on.
Put it down to experience for you. For me, I wont allow myself to get too emotionally involved as its not worth the heart ache.
True love does not happen over night, trust me. True love is not based on words but the actions that one carries out. Sometimes we allow ourselves to be vulnerable because in reality we are craving that special something, I suppose.
Life is full of experiences, atleast I know what I dont want and maybe that is for you too.
Focus on what you need and not what you think you want..
