They could be harvesting phone numbers as well. Since the pandemic came in there has been an increase in scam calls from generated numbers that look similar to your own.... People have been caught for thousands
It's an end to end encrypted messaging service but you have to give your phone number to whoever you re in contact with. Can do voice and video calls as well.
