I find it incongrous they are paid immense amounts of money for what they do, the same with footballers, surely our great surgeons, doctors and engineers are worth more

From the evidence we have she ran away, who does that after killing a young man, even in an accident, she should give herself up to justice, or maybe things work differently in America. How can she disregard the parents of the young lad she killed.

Maybe death by careless driving, whether she had been drinking is another issue.
