you answered your own question in the last sentence. he needed you. and you were there for him. to listen to him. sometimes you give but you don't get anything back. life is a blank book and you fill it in line by line page by page. there is no script or gaurantee that a good deed will bring you anything in return except the fact that you made another human being feel good about themselves or need a shoulder to lean on.
maybe after he gets his life sorted out he'll come back to you. if he doesn't then know that you were there for him and always will be. take something from that and use it to enrich your own life.
As luck would have it, i'm going to be in the st. louis area on business in 2 weeks. now i know Missouri is the show me state so maybe i can find an activity partner to show me the country life for a few days?
My most romantic date was with a very special someone from CS. A ride on the train into Philadelphia then a horse and carriage ride around the historic part of the city. Holding hands and keeping each other warm because it was freezing!
