I just got back from there, spent 3 days in Manhattan which is a must do if you want to see as much as possible... travelling from Jersey is to be avoided! You must go to the 'Top of the Rock': the top of the Rockefeller Center, Times Square at NIGHT and walk the Brooklyn Bridge. The subway is cheap and efficient and not too hard to work out,cabs are inexpensive and everywhere too...
