So they went along their merry way scratching their heads declaring they had never realized that before and they would question their leaders. Easy done.
I don't know why. Yet I have met many men who use that line over and over and over again - then low and behold you find out nobody broke their heart at all - it was all the other way around. Yet it gets them the sympathy vote sometimes.
