The Minister for Agriculture is under fire for announcing a free cheese scheme for the needy - the morning after details of what's likely to be the toughest budget ever were revealed.
Some 53 tonnes of free cheese to people in need in the run up to Christmas under the EU-funded scheme announced today by Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith.
He said the cheese will be available free of charge for distribution to those most in need. It will be available from November 15th "in time for Christmas".
Opposition parties say it shows how out of touch the Government is and accused it of making political capital out of a scheme that has been running without announcement since 1987.
