the tragedy of 9/11 was the unlikely source for this wonderfully touching musical. the town of gander newfoundland canada was thrust onto the world stage as 38 jets were diverted there after the terrorist attacks in nyc and washington, dc. the best of humanity rose to the occasion to care for over 7000 stranded passengers. lifelong friendships and displays of gratitude were formed. proud to be a canadian. wish i could be a newfoundlander. the musical returns to the stage in canada in 2024. this multi-award winning show should not be missed. i watch it today (2023) and it still fills me with emotions. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. a broadway theatrical performance was recorded and available on apple tv+. posted 2 videos in the movie section of this site that give a little more detail. one is an equally moving documentary of the making of the musical that includes interviews of the people who were the sources for the characters.
