Come to think of it, being told to "calm down" does seem a little patronising doesn't it ...

I know what you mean ... Even the Television presenters and speakers here in Australia seem to use that phrase all too often in their speeches

Yes "Ya Know" is the most irritating phrase for me, which i mentioned at the beginning

I try my best to lipread but really not much good at it, especially when there's lots of movement going on and not sure where to look .
Probably partly explains why i'm much less social these days and tend to keep myself to myself.

You make a fair point, but it complicates matters further when you're hearing other noises (tinnitus) in your head and trying to comprehend what the person or people to the left side of me are actually saying when being virtually deaf in that ear ... ....

I understand where you're coming from. I have tried to learn and understand a little of foreign languages, but find it difficult to hear clearly and properly even with my "good" ear , which is not the best now when all is said and done.
I also really do struggle picking out conversations among a group of people all talking at once ... although sitting to the left of them helps a little... Oh! and i'm loath to use a hearing aid at this time as well.

As well as having constant Tinnitus in both ears, it's at its worst in my left ear, and over time i've also virtually become deaf in that ear as well ... believed to of been caused by industrial issues, but difficult to know (or prove) for certain, and first developed these Tinnitus/hearing problems around 20 years ago when in my 30's.
I can only hope my right ear doesn't go the same way as well ...
