I thought the new dual Judge/Viewer voting system was a welcome improvement to the format this year. Australia put up a good effort and were clearly the Judges favourites, but just tipped out by the viewers pick of Ukraine at the finish... so close and yet so far
Correct! ... the visual impact of the performance is getting more important in the contest by the year. You only have to check out the results of recent years to acknowledge that. And so that being the case, Russia's impressive act i believe has the strongest chance based on this alone, despite the song not being quite as good as a few of the other contestants in my opinion.
Read your original post again ... Where abouts did you say "I THINK" in your post ? ... NOWHERE!
BTW ... nobody says you do. If you personally don't like the show and think the music sucks etc, again i repeat "nobody is forcing you to watch" ... simple!
I totally agree with you, it has become political along with the usual voting favouritism towards neighbouring countries and cultures etc. I see it more for the fun aspect now rather than anything else. As for Australia and other non- European nations being allowed to participate, i hope you will take a look at my earlier posting above ^^^ ... Thanks!
Thanks for your efforts with the Finalist list galrads ... good work!
The reason the USA doesn't participate in the show is that the event is predominately for European nations. As for Australia and several other non-European being permitted to participate, i can only put this down to their level of interest and enthusiasm for the show ... not forgetting the fact that as far as Australia is concerned, it's a multi-cultural society and still part of of the British Commonwealth.
I understand there are plans for an Asian version of the show underway. But for a world wide event encompassing the possibility of all nations competing, maybe a "Globalvision" Song contest could be an idea
It may be a "silly contest" as you describe, but it's entertaining in it's own way nonetheless. Besides if you're not interested in the show, is anybody forcing you to watch
Yep!, Max Bygraves passed away in 2012 aged 89 here in Queensland Australia after developing Alzheimer's disease... another British national treasure and a sad way to end life following a long and lustrous career
Hasn't been quite as fun since Terry Wogan gave up the hosting is it ? ... and sadly there'll be no return now either
When it comes to the UK entrants and that of a few other nations, the fact that their songs are performed live only the once compared to twice from the rest of the competing nations puts them at a distinct disadvantage i believe. Having said that, UK's songs have been pretty weak and disappointing in recent years. Maybe a good shake up is needed as to how their entries are chosen/voted is called for
I agree with you regarding Ukraine's 2004 entry galrads It was my favourite too and certainly stood out from the rest of the usual stuff ... not to mention Rusiana herself was rather pleasing to the eye
Thanks! .... The song (and singer) are pretty good and Australia is tipped to finish in the top 5 despite not having the visual factor that seems to of become necessary to do well in recent years. Although not sure why Australia qualifies to be in the competition at all considering we're in a separate continent to that of Europe But all the same it's good to be part of the show ... even if it is really only for fun
Although seen more as a fun event rather than a serious outlet for quality songs. This annual event takes place at Stockholm Sweden this year after winning the rights to do so following their victory in 2015 of the contest.
This year there are 42 countries competing with the first of the 2 semi-finals commencing on May 10th to determine who makes up the 26 competing countries in the final on May 14th.
As it stands Russia are the clear cut favourites with betting agencies to take out the event followed by Ukraine and France.
Would like to hear from other interested members of their thoughts and opinions ... and whether there are any "sleepers" to watch out for ?
On a sad note ... Terry Wogan the respected and popular BBC commentator who had hosted the show for many years, passed away earlier this year due to Cancer. Although he gave up commentating on the show a number of years ago due to frustrations with the apparent political and neighbour voting biases. His witty dry humour will always be remembered for giving the show added interest.
Britain uses the well recognised "God Save The Queen" as their national anthem, which is essentially a 'Royal anthem" in its lyrical content, and debatable whether it can be described as a true 'National athem' . If however they were to adopt the much better, suitable and more rousing "Land Of Hope And Glory" as their anthem song, this would rate right up there with the best around in the world ... and be a more fitting accompaniment for their Union flag (mistakenly referred to as the Union Jack) which is arguably the best looking and most recognised flag in the world ... in my opinion
Sorry i can't advise you on that as i never borrow books from the library ... anyway i find using printed copies of your profile photo works a treat for me
Leaving aside politics and nationalistic pride or self patriotism etc. Which countries national anthems do you believe to be the best or most rousing ones ... based on musical composition and ability to inspire their citizens ?.
Personally, as far as musical structure is concerned, i would find it difficult to go past ... France's "La Marseillaise" and Germany's "Deutschlandlied" mainly based upon the strength and integrity of their compositions.
Would be interesting to hear other members views and opinions on this topic ... and hopefully from a wide cross-section of the world's populace too!
After attending my first day at primary school, i thought that was all that was required and didn't have to go any more I was then stunned and disappointed to discover from my Mum that i had to go the next day and so forth as well ...
Eurovision Song Contest 2016
