40 Ways to Create Peace of Mind

“Set peace of mind as your highest goal, and organize your life around it.”


1. Take 5-10 minutes for a simple seated meditation
2. Take 100 deep breaths, counting “and one,” “and two,” and so on, with “and” on the inhalations and the numbers on the exhalations.
3. Take a meditative walk, focusing solely on the physical sensations of walking-the earth under your feet, the swing of your hips.
4. Find a guided meditation on YouTube and let it lull you into a blissful state of presence.
5. Practice alternate nostril breathing. Hold the left nostril down and inhale through the right; then hold the breath. Release the left nostril, hold the right one down, and exhale through the left. Now start on the left with an inhalation, exhaling on the right. This is one set. Do up to five of them.
Communication
6. Write down everything that’s weighing you down mentally and then burn it as a form of letting go
7. Write down everything you’ve learned from a difficult experience so you can see it as something useful and empowering, instead of something to stress you out.
8. Tell someone how their actions affected you instead of holding it in and building resentment.
9. Call someone you’ve denied forgiveness and tell them you forgive them
10. Apologize for a mistake instead of rehashing it, and then choose to forgive yourself.

18. Go for a bike ride in a scenic part of town, and immerse yourself in the calm of your environment.
19. Take 5-10 minutes for stretching, syncing your breath with the movements (or if you have an hour, visit a local studio for a yoga class).
20. Declutter a cluttered part of your home, creating a more peaceful space.

21. Muster compassion for someone who hurt you, instead of wallowing in bitterness, which will make it easier to forgive them and set yourself free.
22. Set aside some time to actively enjoy the good things about the present, instead of scheming to create a better future.
23. Create a list of things you love about yourself instead of dwelling on how you wish you were different.
24. Focus on what you appreciate about the people in your life instead of wishing they would change (assuming you’re in healthy relationships).

Just when you thought the world of GMOs couldn't

get any crazier, a group of Frankenscientists from New Zealand has announced their latest mad science project:

A mutant, cloned, genetically modified COW that's being pumped full of hormones to produce engineered milk for human babies.

Yep! While fresh milk is outlawed across America, this monstrosity milk from mutant cloned GMO cows is probably going to be appearing on a Wal-Mart shelf near you!

The world of genetic engineering has fallen even further into the surreal with the announcement that New Zealand "scientists" have unveiled a genetically modified mutant cloned cow which they say produces a reduced-allergen milk for consumption by human babies. This is being reported by the BBC and elsewhere.

Horrifyingly, these Frankenscientists cloned a cow and then altered the embryo using RNA interference. After gestation, the mutant GMO cow was born without a tail! But these scientists say that's no problem, and that the mutation of having no tail couldn't possibly be related to anything they did with the cow's DNA.

I'm not making this up. This is the insanity of the quack science world in which we now live.

The Pineal Gland, Melatonin, and it's Effect on Sleep

Deep inside the brain there is a tiny pine-shaped organ called the pineal gland. The pineal gland serves many purposes, one of which is to produce a hormone called melatonin.

Melatonin works to communicate information about environmental lighting to different parts of the body. In other words, it acts as the body's internal clock; it helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle. It promotes awareness during the day and reduces the amount of time it takes to fall asleep during the night.

It also affects the quality of dreams. High levels of melatonin lead to vivid dreams and high quality sleep, while lower levels lead to trouble sleeping, insomnia, poor quality dreams, and often even mood disorders due to the chemical imbalance.

Speaking in lucid dreaming terms, 'vivid' means more lifelike, easier to recall, and naturally the dreamer is more aware of the dream. The more vivid the dream is,the easier it is to obtain lucidity.

1. Have a consistent sleep schedule.

This is a pretty obvious one. Going to bed and waking up at roughly the same time every day is what sets your 'body clock' (aka melatonin). You know how sometimes you wake up 5 minutes before your alarm rings? That's your melatonin in action. But it cannot function if you do not have a consistent sleep schedule. This internal 'clock' is used in many lucid dreaming methods.

2. Sleep in complete darkness.

Scientific research shows that your melatonin levels are the highest at night while sleeping in complete darkness, around the time that you dream. This promotes vivid dreams and better dream recall. In the ideal situation, there should be no difference in darkness when you open your eyes compared to when you close them. Sleeping with a light on decreases the quality of dreams and messes up your internal clock as it brings down the melatonin level in your body. Don't let light pollution ruin your dreams for you!

3. Limit your time spent with electronics.

The bright light of a computer can burn up your melatonin levels if you spend too much time in front of one. Don't spend more than 5 hours on your computer each day. Also the electromagnetic fields of cell phones, televisions, and computers can burn up your melatonin levels. Limit your time on your phone and do not sleep with your computer or TV too close to you.

How to Be Self Aware?

In the Zen tradition there are various “awareness” practices that help a seeker become more aware of his/her “self”. These practices, as helpful as they are, just point to the field of awareness ever present in you which does not need to be generated. But initially it’s helpful to do some practices just to step out of the “mind”.

In ordinary circumstances your awareness is completely preoccupied with “mind” activity and hence there is no room for any “self” awareness. The following paths can be followed to step out of the “noisy” world of the mind and bring attention or awareness back to self.

Watch your thoughts – This is an excellent practice to create a gap between mind activity and awareness. All you need to do is be acutely aware of what’s going on in the mind. Be like a cat waiting for the mouse to come out of a hole.

You will be surprised to see that when you become aware of the mind, thoughts stop for a while. If you stay aware you will notice a thought emerging out of the silent space, don’t associate with it and let it flow by. Do this as many times as you can every day and for as long as you can.

Become aware of subtle objects in your surroundings – It’s easy to observe the “gross” objects in your surroundings but it requires deep presence to be aware of the “subtle”.

Look out for the most delicate sounds that can be heard and then listen for sounds that are even more subtle. Become aware of tiny specks of dust or spots in your surrounding. If you are in nature look for the subtle moment of leaves in the wind.

You will find that as you become aware of the “subtle” you also become aware of you as the awareness in which the listening or watching occurs. When there is no mind activity all that remains is “you” as pure awareness.

Become aware of your breathing – This is the most common practice used by the Zen monks to step out of the mind and increase awareness. Be one with each breath and be aware of yourself as the field of awareness in which the breathing takes place.

Don’t try to control your breathing. Just follow it consciously. Initially it will be difficult to stay conscious for even a few breaths, but with time you can do this more effortlessly.

Stay conscious of your body movements – A very effective means of becoming self aware is to become acutely conscious of your body movements. Don’t try to control your body, just let it move free while staying present enough to monitor it.

With time you will be able to notice subtle movements in your body that you are unaware of before. This practice indirectly helps improve your body language but that’s just a side effect.

Place your attention on “attention” – In the true sense of the word “self awareness” means placing awareness on awareness. Placing your attention on attention itself. It’s difficult to describe how to do this but it just happens naturally when you become conscious of your “attention”. This is a deeply peaceful state to be in because it’s devoid of any external form.

All these practices will seem like a lot of effort initially. This is because of the habitual tendency of your awareness to get mixed with “mind” activity. It’s like separating “awareness” from the “mind”, taking it away from its “pseudo” home to its true dwelling which is within itself.

We live in a society where taking “action” is considered more essential and pertinent than to work with your thoughts. But the truth is that taking action will yield you very mediocre, if anything, results if your thoughts, and beliefs, are out of whack. If you have negative thought patterns going on, it’s impossible to achieve positive results. The mystery of success is hidden in this simple proverb “As you think, so you become”.

The reality around you responds to the thoughts in your mind. If you don’t have the ideal body weight, it is more to do with the thoughts you are thinking than the food you are eating.
