" over the pond"

I know this phrase is used in the UK and I am sure it originated there. I have a bet going with a friend who insists it is used all over Europe. Can anyone tell me the origin and the story/history behind the phrase. This all started with the Golf Nationals this weekend. Thanks Englanders.

9/11

Searched all over and found that no one mentioned the anniversary of the terrorist attack on the US, today. It seemed strange, too, that not much coverage of it on the television. CNN was very disappointing as Anderson Cooper had a debate with two other political figures that faulted our government for not being prepared for it. Pres. Obama did not campaign today. Romney was found fault that he did not mention our military or any knowledge of military protocol in his nomination speech, when and if he became President. So today he went and campaigned as a sympathiser to the fireman and others to give them his condolences, only trying to benefit himself, it seemed.
Yes, a lot of these blogs are so involved with the US and this election, it is pitiful that no one sent or mentioned their sympathies or rememberance of our tragedy, except for one, in a poem.
So, in rememberance I send out my sympathies to all who were involved in that terrible tragedy. Many who died there or were involved were from many different countries and other nationalities.May they all find peace, survivors or not and their families and friends.God bless them all and all our countries on this site. May 9/11 never be forgotten or dismissed ever.
