What happened to the good old days??

I am too young to have enjoyed the time period but wish I hadn’t missed it….
I love to hear Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra croon a tune and really adore an old black and white movie. What happened to the days when a man wore a suit and hat just to leave the house to run an errand? Or when a lady always wore a hat and gloves and always displayed good manners. I am not sure why I love seeing a man hold a door for a lady or seeing a woman wait for a man to open her car door when they arrive at their destination but…..I do. I wish that others today were just more considerate of others and people still had enough self pride in their appearance.
......anyone know what I mean?

Oh, I can't imagine having to put a suit on every time I leave the house!! I mean, if I'm going out on the town, I'll wear nice things, but to run errands? laugh

But I do think we should be more considerate to each other, that's always a good thing!!thumbs up
You have a point! Why wear a suit to run errands right? But when I am out I notice too many people who just dont care what they look like. Back in the day when men wore suits and women wore hats and gloves there was a standard. Today look around and you see that standard has been lost which is what I want to convey.
Do you think that you can tell a lot about a person by the way they dress?
hi Lacey i can remember when i was a kid in the 50s and 60s i don't think it is so much about your dress. but the person you are people to day don't seem as friendly or have the respect that they used to.handshake
Dear Lacey,I know what you mean.I`m 53 and I do regret for that good old times my mother and father enjoyed.I feel comfortable in smart clothes, I enjoy good manners specialy if men have good manners.Sometimes I think that those who say that all that doesn`t matter and being a good person matters ALL they don`t have enough money to be dressed well or they don`t have good knowledge of how to look unique and good with "small tipps"I mean to combine nice details and "do it yourself"knit a cardigan or a skirt.
I`m not oldfashioned but ,NICE and GOOD, that`s sth you have inside. What do you think?

I sometimes wonder if the those time really were like that or if the movies just made it appear that way.
I think it went beyond the clothes to the fact that people actually SAW other people rather than being shut off by their cell phones, ipods, fears.

Still, it was not perfect either.
I know there's a lot of romance to that era and I miss it too. (I was born in 1951). But there's some dark sides to that rat pack mentality too. I can remember that left handed drink, right handed cigarette very well. There was also a machismo that was part of the package. I'm not suggesting that it always played out in real life, but it was embraced in the movies and entered some real lives. In fact, I recently saw a movie and was knocked off my chair to see Cary Grant wallop some actress lady in a boat or convertible. (I can't recall which). But since I grew up in that era, I now realize that subconsciously that mentality was in some ways spawned and absorbed, giving the wrong signals to both men and women. No wonder we're conflicted. But I just LOVE the shoes and dresses of the era. I actually feel nostalgia for the early 1900s.
