I want to try to answer it based on my knowledge. I'm not a British tho. :p

King George VI didn't have son, and his elder brother was resigning to be a King. So after him, the throne went to Queen Elizabeth, King George VI first daughter.

Short explanation. I don't know if my answer is also true. I answered this based on my common knowledge. :) I hope it's satisfying.
if the truth be known
it is like the game of chess, King is the highest,
seeing as Liz (queen) was the eldest of 3 children it then goes to her, had there been a son Liz would not have been queen.
It is always the eldest Son, if no son eldest daughter.
And Lizzie's (Queen) hubby is not a part of British royal family until marriage s he could not be king.

What interesting for me is that, their national anthem could change based on who rules the country. CMIIW. So when it's King George VI, the anthem was God Save The King. But now in Queen Elizabeth's era, it's God Save The Queen.
Hahaha.. Why is that Parti? cheers hug

A serious topic with a legitimate question,i hope you will get the right answer. popcorn
King Edward VIII did something that monarchs do not have the luxury of doing - he fell in love. King Edward was in love with Mrs. Wallis Simpson, not only an American, but also a married woman already once divorced. Yet, in order to marry the woman he loved, King Edward was willing to give up the British throne - and he did.

To some, this was the love story of the century. To others, it was a scandal that threatened to weaken the monarchy. In reality, the story of King Edward VIII and Mrs. Wallis Simpson never fulfilled either of these notions. Instead, the story is about a prince who wanted to be like everyone else.

They would have had a King but Edward chose love over the crown.heart wings
When Queen Elizabeth dies, Prince Charles, her son, will become King.
Frank, are you a cat? Lol.

Monte, then the Anthem will be God Save The Kingm right? I thought it'd be William, no?
Fury, that brings up a good point if they will have to change the anthem.thumbs up
Sorry Fury, I forgot to answer your other question. Yes, after Charles dies, William will be become King and then Harry. IMO, Harry will change the place to a disco cause he's the wild one. There was some talk that Charles might give up the throne to give it to William but William is still being groomed for the position so I don't think he will be ready for it when Elizabeth dies.bouquet
Just a thought, Monte. Because I find it strange that we can change the national anthem. I thought national anthem was unchangeable. Hehehe. :)
Oh I see.. I thought because Charles married Camilla, he couldn't be a king, just like Edward back then. Your answer is englighten me. Lol. :D Thank you! :)

Harry to be a king, I wonder what it would be like. hehehe.. We might see a jubilee just like the last one more often then.. Maybe even crazier. :D
Well Monte, I personally agree with you, looking back their history. But yea, I think William still needs to learn a lot of things before he becomes a King himself. :D
sorry to say... 2 mistakes

why " For United Kingdom" ... official name;
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

second ... "England has a Queen"

the ( British) Commonwealth (of Nations) has the Queen cool
Jada, I was given a history lesson a couple days ago about Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Britain, etc. Unless one has studied the history of the countries, people think that England and Ireland are independent of each other which is what i thought. I'm still confused by it all.confused
I don't feel anyone has thoroughly answered your question Bungallow.

The British system does allow for the crown to be worn by either gender. i.e. A king or queen's eldest daughter or son may become the future king or queen. This has not always been so. Previously it was the monarch's eldest son (irrespective of whether he had elder sisters) who was heir to the throne.

This has been changed and it is now simply the eldest child of the monarch who is first in line for the throne.

Unlike some countries, for example Thailand, where there has never been a ruling queen (only male heirs can become king) though this needs to change there as the aging king's eldest son is a useless, gambling organised crime head and the king's daughter is the popular successor.

(by the way - I would be arrested and locked up for posting this in Thailand under ancient Les Majest legislation).
And BTW, for all the Australians, New Zelanders and Canadians on here - we are equally qualified to comment/clarify as Queen Elizabeth II is our head of states also.
hollywood? really? wake up.
Yea, sounds like an american rolling on the floor laughing

sorry bunga, but that one you deserved.

Btw i never seen a hollywood film really caring about kings? Not real kings. More like the king of Queens... rolling on the floor laughing
