DublinSurfer: I'm a fan of U2's old stuff (pre POP) and eventhough I cant stand listening to Bono spout on all the time I cant take away from how good the band have and can be. It's also very annoying that all of a sudden it's the cool thing now to hate U2, just like it use to piss me off that if you didn't like U2 10-20 years ago you weren't fit to be irish.

In saying that:
Come back in another 20 years then you can compare U2 to the situation the Rolling stones are in now!
U2 haven't released a genuinely quality album since 93.
Millions of people like Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson and all the utter tripe out there aswell, that must make them atleast as good as the Stones by your logic? No thought so, marketing has alot to do with it. People buy the brand as opposed to the quality in U2's case these days. Their lyrics are sub par and mean nothing these, it's just covered by catchy hooks.
Millions of people have been wrong about plenty of things.

As you say millions of people may like Britney Spears but her last 2 albums sold around 7-8 million between the 2 of them. The fact that their last 2 maybe even 3 albums has sold over 10 million each says they are doing something right. You must also remember that real music fans don't buy Britney Spears albums and can you see a fan of hers today buying an album of hers in say 15 years time?. U2 have released genuine quality albums since 1993. Passengers is a very underrated album and pop was not bad but not as good as their earlier stuff. A lot of people did not like Rattle & Hum yet it still sold over 14 million albums and I think its a great album. Their last 2 albums and their current 1 I feel are top notch. I am comparing them to the Stones because after 19 years releasing albums they stopped making great albums. Tattoo you in 1982 was their last great album and Undercover, Dirty Work and Steel Wheels were patchy with only a couple of great songs on each album. In 29 years U2 have released a lot a of great albums with maybe pop being the only one that is not a classic.
