OK, I just got back from the jobcenter where I put to them my idea of getting a womens centre off the ground in my local town - we have them in nearby towns and Ill get round to visiting them in the next week or two to see how they operate but id love some advice from anybody whos used one in the past, what sort of services would you expect etc.
It looks like I may be onto a winner with it as three specialist advisors got pretty enthusiastic about it and I would be going into it on a self employed basis initially I think - I worked at the CAB for 3 yrs so do have a basic idea of how these things work but has anybody got any advice they can give me please

I'm not sure what you mean Are you on about a womens shelter or more along the lines where you advise them on how they can get back into work and also advise them on health issues? Or am I completely on the wrong track which I probably am

More like helping women in crisis to access services and stuff like that - not a DV home, just somewhere where courses on self confidence or work skills or loads of stuff like that can go on in a safe environment - Im really excited T
My old boss from the CAB is really good at accessing funding and I know the National Lottery do a lot as well as there being gvmt stuff available due to an initiative on having help available in all areas for DV issues - plus, I can get loans....... do you have any other ideas?

Ah, I'm with you now. We have quite a few of them here. They're worthwhile places and help a lot of women in many ways. Good luck with it all Trish
I just had to nip out for a few hours and the winds just blown my front bikelight off my bike as I was riding home
I've not heard of a D.V. home before. Is it another name for a refuge?

I won't be laughing at 5am in morning though when I've got to walk to work Maybe I'll chance riding on the pavement with no front light and just hope a doesn't spot me and give me a £30 fine

Would your centre include some college courses? Have a creche for those of whom attend the courses will have somewhere safe and reliabel and with someone whom has the certificates to prove they are registered, to leave thier pre schoolers? Will it also run a mother and toddler group? Where momscome and mingle with other moms as well as thier kids reaping benefits of interacting with other lil ankle biters?
When I was in a domestic violent home, I left and was put into a hostel, they (Hostel worker) put me in touch with the family centre. Much like what you seem to want to get up and running. They were BRILL very helpful very supportive. they helped me with the benefits side and applying for loans. Once I got my flat, they helped to get furniture, they even came shopping with me for applpiances so they could barter on my behalf to get price down. (I was very low on self esteem back then) Once settled into new place they encouraged me to take a course and one thing lead to another. I ended up with diploma and actually working for the college.
Trish, I wish you so much luck with this venture. Cos you won't even realise what confidence and self esteem, you can give back, even if to just one woman!!!

Hopefully, it won't be too long before it all gets up and running then

Thanks Jo, Ive got a couple of those tee shirts too but they are from the days when the refuges were pretty basic and that was that, no womens centers or any other help from anywhere, the police would knock on the door and say "so what did you do to deserve it this time mrs xyz" Im so happy things have changed so much...
Yes, thats the sort of place im planning, it all has to be done by people with certificates but Ill be looking deeper than any certs, people doing this kind of thing have to be skilled in empathy and all sorts - Ill get as many services running and as much help as possibe thats for sure.......
Thanks for your encouragement Hun and Im really proud of you for fighting your way through what I know is a really tough time....
