In the end, the only true judge is that of history.
When people look to critique or bolster a current president, they look at the moment at hand. It is this reason that I say history is the ultimate judge, for then you can see what they failed to do and what they succeeded to do and weigh the opinions.
One week the president may look like a genius, the next a fool. A good example of this is with recent ex-president G.W.Bush. His leadership after 9/11 was astounding (IMO). But, his handling of the economic crisis that ensued at the end of his presidency was foolish (IMO). But, to really judge whether he was an astounding president or a foolish one, is hard to do when we are still amidst the economic crisis.
IMO, GW will go down as one of the greatest leaders as far as National Defense of this country. But, I also believe that he will be remembered as one of the most foolish, for having the economic crisis having happened on his watch.
Only history will tell though. Ask this again in 20 years when this crisis is well in the past and we can look at his presidency without a biest moment to judge him on.
To me this goes for any president, whether he be Republican, Democrat, or whatever political party affiliation. I don't think anyone who becomes president, has the intentions of destroying a country and they have nothing but the best intentions at heart. There are somethings however, outside of their control that can be a factor in events that shape their presidency. Only when we can look at these factors objectively , can we make a fair opinion of how they performed while in the performance of their duties.
You can't tell in my opinion but everyone thinks they can predict it so let them. Sometimes presidents are seen as great until many years after they have been out of office. Lyndon Johnson who basically inherited Vietnam was a big advocate for equal rights but he left office in disgrace.
