There are quite a few sites where you can get in touch with an inmate.
GurlzBehindBars.com, or whatever
It’s strange, and not, at the same time.
“Hi, my name is Mandy, I’m serving nine years for chopping of my ex boyfriends organ because he forgot to by chocolate on Valentine’s day. I like reading, walks in the yard, and my favorite TV-show is Prison Break.”
But some are attracted to that, with the whole danger-feel to it. I remember reading about Ricardo Ramirez, The Nightstalker, one of the worst serial killers in US (and LA) history. A really nasty piece of work, he is. He got loads affectionate letters from women all over US when he was caught.
But inmates and Internet, is that really a great idea?
There was a story a few years ago on CBS 60 minutes, about inmates being used as cheap labor. Various hotlines, helpdesks, etc. One prison had inmates taking calls for a famous airline. The story was how great it was inmates were allowed to be productive and that whole angle.
But, now, think about this for a few seconds.
You call a number to book a flight ticket, and it’s an inmate taking your call. He has your address, and your dates when you will not be home.
Don’t you think that’s a perfect bit of information to have and tell your mates on the outside that; “Look, dudes, they’ll be gone between the 5th and 17th, go loot their house, I want the kitten and the DVD player”?
