A couple of years ago, my mother found out that her father, whom she actually never met, as he went to Argentina 2mths before she was born, and never returned.
She spent years searching for him through Interpol, the Consulate at Buenos Aires. No trace.
Well, there certainly was a trace. And much more.
Through serendipity, a man fronted at the town where she was born, applying for a copy of his deceased father's birth certificate. The name on the certificate of-course stood out for the official attending to him. It was that of my mother's father!
The man was from Spain, originally from Sth America share the same father! It turned out my grandfather had not been killed after all, which was one of the rumours that abounded. He in fact took another wife in Argentia, and a whole new family. He never returned to his wife and four children in Italy. My grandmother died at 103 thinking he had been killed and never believed he could have ever deceived her. Well, I guess he's been doing some explaining to each of his wives!
So, the other day it really hit me. I have a Sth. American uncle now living in Spain. And cousins, too! I can tell you, I think he is still in shock, as he had no idea of his father's double life!
So, if anyone out there had a grandfather called Domenico who lived in Argentina, and a father called Giovanni, who now lives in Spain, I would love to hear from you. We may be related!!!
So, a trip from Italy to Spain in September is now definitely on my itinerary! Ola to my cousins out there!
I am interested in others' stories of their family skeletons!

Hi SV!
Yes, it is quite amazing. You have no idea the time and money my mother spent over many years, trying to locate her father. Interpol, consulates, you name it. No record of him.
Well...wrong!
We tried to call him the other night, but no answer on his mobile. I speak a smattering of Spanish from when I lived in Madrid for a few months in '82, but nowhere enough for a conversation. Nonetheless, it will end up being a mixture of Italian, Spanish and English.
I need to get hold of an accelerated Spanish language interactive computer program!
