Jesus camp is for his most private payers with his disciples. It is up to them to spread anything of keep anything from these prayer sessions quiet. They are the ones blessed by him and who know him best. Jesus is preparing for the future and we must all respect his plans no matter how excited we are about them or how much we wish to share. Only he and his closest disciples can do this if he asks them to. We should all pray that God restricts our tongues and keeps us humble. angel

Among the Charismatic churches is the Holiness sect which appeared in the late 19th century, about the same time as the Pentacostals. Both were derivative of the Church of God.
These are the snake handlers.Occasionally someone dies of snake bite. There have been legal actions to remove small children from the home.Another demonsration of faith is the consumption of poison, always dilute strychnine. The mason jar sits on the altar where anyone so inclined can have a hit.
It is now known that the effect of nipping strychnine is much like an acid trip--a very likely vehicle for seeing Jesus or whatever else you want to hallucinate.
There is a Holiness church near here.Appalachia is the most likely area to find one.I attended once around 1966 as a curious boy.
Usually the snakes are milked in advance and they learn how to dose themselves with the strychnine so as to facillitate the "religeous experience."
The scripture is less specific reading "any deadly thing"
Being young and skeptical I suggested they might consider Lead Arsenic just for a change. Then I worried for awile that some zealot might follow through and burn his insides out.I had nought to worry about. They only appear to be that stupid.
cool

I guess there are insane people in all walks of life, even in church. I am a member of East Roxboro Church of God and my brother is the assistant pastor. I have never seen anyone at our church touch a snake or pass around poison. I am sure that there are people that do this. Nowhere in our church practices does it mention dancing with snakes. People started this in the mountains and they based it on a verse in Mark where it says, and i am paraphrasing, you can touch snakes and not be bitten. It means that christians need not worry about the evil in this world cause God is all powerful. it didn't mean to tempt God, buy doing something crazy like standing outside in a lightening storm when you know to go inside. Anyway, just letting ya know that not all church of god members engage in suicidal behaviors.

Thank you Storm.I know many wonderful people in varied faiths including fundamentalist Christens. The love of my youth was raised in THE ASSEMBLY OF GOD.I learned from her the complexity of a mind and disposition different than my own.
I descibed the Holiness sect only for the reality of their existance as a phenomenon. There is much more to it than my feeble summary.

Aren't you responsible and those who surround you for everything that has been done for you and your loved ones? You did have to walk the walk right? Don't you praise yourself as well for what has been brought for you in this life? Did something just fall on your lap? I know you may say that God gives you strength and inspiration, but it has to come from you if you are to actually attract some things into your life and make it happen... or?

When things go bad, do you blame God or yourself or the people who were responsible for those bad things? Do you often say there is a meaning after a bad event and experience? Or it's God's plan?

I'm not trying to sway you from your belief. Just trying to get a better sense here.

wonderworker, you are so right! we all have our own ideas and beliefs. I think everyone should feel free to believe or to not believe. It's not my thing to push christainty on anyone. i believe it is a personal choice. hug

Good point wonderworker. It's good when we learn something from others and see how we are so different as to develop an understanding for ourselves and how we see the world and others. Truth seeker indeed!

I dig and agree with your last paragraph.

I have heard that some use snakes in their services as a way to show that they are unafraid of Satan (symbolized by the serpent).

damn..if that satan was so tiny that he could hide himself (here all the women should be happy because i don't think satan could be a SHE) inside a small snake, i would also not give any crap about that satan.
