I woke up this morning and flipped on the news, like I always do. I got an ear full.
A gunman walks into a LA Fitness in P.A.,heads toward the Aerobic Room, turns out the lights and starts shooting.
You are not safe ANYWHERE, it could happen at anytime. People are snapping, they have had enough and they are going to take you with them. This world has turn people cold and desensitized them.
I wonder what was going through his head the moment he pulled the trigger? What motivates people to shoot and kill humans like wild animals? Questions that may never be answered, they died with the gunman.
Perhaps we all need a little bit of compassion toward those reaching for help. There are always signs. Instead of turning away, reach out to help that person struggling through bumps in their road. Give them your hand with love and understanding, tell them it will be okay.

You never know, you could be saving many lives.
People snapped like that in the past as well, it isn't just the times. Only reason we are so aware of it today is because of the 24/7 global media we live in.

I have only heard bits of what took place on our news service here in Australia, firstly my heart goes out to the families of the vitims, also to the parents of the gunman as they must be devastaed at what took place & would be doing a lot of soul searching.
As I dont live in America I dont know the full circumstances , but some we have had here it has been as a result of bullying, lonliness, mental health issues etc, I am not trying to make excuses for anyones actions but I do totally agree with your statements

So is this your why of sticking your head in the sand? To look the other way and say, "Oh well, it wasn't me".
I cannot remember when I was a child and seeing so many random shootings like this, it is getting worse...WAKE UP! There are MORE shootings at schools, and malls.
The world and the humans who live in it have become cold and desensitized, turn away, look away and do nothing..until someone you know dies.

Thankyou Gyspsy, yes we tendt to sadly overlook why they choose to do these acts hopefully as a society we begin to search for long term solutions to these issues
Great thread its a very tragic topic but worthwhile

Not sticking my head anyplace, just simply saying that it's not a rare occurance. They also didn't have 24/7 global media like they have today which is why you probably never heard of such events.
It's a matter of nature that as the population grows, the more aggressive that people will be towards one another. It's a simple case of probability. And with news coverage being what it is, you will undoubtedly hear more about it & in more depth detail.
Of course I mourn the dead and wish well those who survived, but choosing not to express it does not make them resurrect or heal, if it did, I'd express it as much as the next guy. I however choose to look at the good that life has to offer instead of dwell on the evils of the world.
So please, don't chastise me as if I am condoning what happened and don't act as though I'm some cold & callous person that could care less.

So sorry you still seem cold and callous to me.
I am not dwelling on the evil in the world, but simply putting out a solution to better it.
COMPASSION toward those in need.
And by the way, I am not that old to where there was no media coverage and the news.

Learn to read the part where i said GLOBAL 24/7 MEDIA. I'm sure they had news coverage such as Foxnews & MSN in 1970. CNN itself was fledgling in the late 80s / early 90s. Nowhere did I say there was zero media when you were a child.

Figured since you don't seem quite so bright, I would inform you that the bolded section was sarcasim.

exactly Da, this has always happened only now with the 24/7 news you hear about everything, as before you had an hour for the news each day so a lot of stuff you never heard about

It's a horrible inhumane incident. I belong to LA club here in NYC and maybe take it even more personal than others, because from now on every time I enter the club I will think about victims.
But these incidents have nothing to do with our world and humans becoming "cold and desensitized" IMO.
It goes way beyond that. Always did.
The world and the humans are very different today (but NOT in a way of becoming cold)
and yet the same as when we were children, and the same as decades before our time.

I remember when neighbors use to wave at one another..
I remember my dad buying grocery's for the person who could not afford them..
I remember helping someone when they had fallen and picking them up to their feet, or helping an old person cross the street.
You tell me how many times within the last couple YEARS you have seen someone do any of the things I mentioned?
I have not.
I hear of people being beaten in public view and no one stops to help..
I hear of a person being ran over, they die on the street..alone.
I say Hi to people and they ignore me or excuse me in the store...no reply.
The world is different....people do not want to be involved, which has desensitized them.

I saw a lot of this back approximately 30 years ago while I was stationed in Brooklyn NY. I was even in a situation where no one wanted to get involved.
It's not a matter of the times. Back 30 years ago, we didn't have the amount of news media like today.
